How Cul-de-Sacs Are Killing Your Community

The Infrastructurist America has posted an interesting article about urban planning. During our Surveying Science degree course, we were required to do one module of engineering design, back then we were told that Cul-de-Sacs are good design for keeping community privacy, limit the number of cars passing back your house etc. But today, Harvard University has done a study that reviews : while Cul-de-Sacs gives privacy, it may kill the community in terms of discouraging people to walk more (which is healthy) and increase the use of car even to the next row of houses, hence, increase the polution on the road (which is damaging to health).

The maps above say it all :

The one on the left is full of Cul-de-Sacs, forcing people to use vehicle to move around, the area is not friendly to walk or ride a bike. This area is likely to have air polution problems.

The one on the right is accessible and people could move around freely by walking and biking. This area will have lesser air polution caused by vehicles on the road.

Ulu Papar Expedition in the Crocker Range

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=152038&id=111160397818&ref=share

From 11 to 24 Jan 2010, a team of 27 people trekked through the forests and cultural landscapes of Ulu Papar to collect data on the importance of this area to the indigenous Dusun people living in the villages of Longkogungan, Kalanggaan, Pongobonon and Terian.

Conducted jointly by Sabah Parks, Pacos, GDF and the communities of Ulu Papar, this expedition team carried out participatory mapping exercises, household livelihoods and demography surveys, participatory video interviews and snapped some amazing photographs of the landscapes and peoples of Ulu Papar.

Data collected from this expedition will be consolidated into a set of ethnobiological databases that will inform the negotiations between Sabah Parks and the Ulu Papar communities on the opportunities for the collaborative management of this area.

3D Google Building Maker

http://mashable.com/2009/10/13/google-building-maker/

Help Map Your City in 3D with Google Building Maker

Crowdsourcing is an increasingly popular way to tackle big problems — both Facebook and Google are taking this approach to translating the web into multiple languages.

Now Google is leveraging the wisdom of the crowds for another purpose: the Building Maker tool helps users make accurate 3D models of buildings for representation in Google Earth().

Using Google-provided aerial photographs, you essentially overlay appropriate 3D shapes on top of several different views of a building to construct an accurate model of it. When finished, submit your building to Google() for review. If approved, the model will be added to the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth.

In the first of our Pictures of Year galleries, we look at the best space images we received this year. This image provided by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope shows brilliant blue stars wreathed by warm, glowing clouds. The festive portrait is the most detailed view of a young stellar grouping, called R136 in the 30 Doradus Nebula

Rules of the lab 1) If an experiment works, something has gone wrong. 2) When you don't know what you're doing, do it neatly. 3) Experiments must be reproduceable, they should fail the same way each time. 4) First draw your curves, then plot your data. 5) Experience is directly proportional to equipment ruined. 6) Always keep a record of your data. It indicates that you have been working. 7) To do a lab really well, have your report done well in advance. 8) If you can't get the answer in the usual manner, start at the answer and derive the question. 9) In case of doubt, make it sound convincing. 10) Do not believe in miracles--rely on them. 11) Team work is essential, it allows you to blame someone else. 12) All unmarked beakers contain fast-acting, extremely toxic poisons. 13) No experiment is a complete failure. At least it can serve as a negative example. 14) Any delicate and expensive piece of glassware will break before any use can be made of it.
